If you remember, our family took a break from swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School over the summer. Our schedule was just a little too crazy between travel and house hunting and it was a good decision for us to press pause. But now that it’s the end of October, Liam’s been back for a few months and making huge strides. I’m just amazed at the difference between now and last spring, so I wanted to update you on how he’s doing.
For one, he moved up a level. Liam is now in the Glider 1 class. While it’s a big deal, of course, and we were totally excited about it, we mostly did it because of Liam’s age. The junior level classes are for kids ages 3-4, while the glider classes range from 5-12. Since Liam was so close to his fifth birthday when we restarted swim lessons, Goldfish suggested that we think about moving up. I’m so glad that we took their advice.
Liam really enjoys being with an older group of kids and he’s able to focus better. The main difference between the two levels is that kids in Glider 1 learn how to do the back glide. Liam learned this in no time and it’s now one of his favorite things to do.
Another thing that has helped Liam’s swim skills is that we switched to a week day morning for lessons. There have been several mornings where Liam was the only student in the class. Obviously this changes from week to week, but it has really been helpful for him to have a handful of unintentional one-on-one classes. Goldfish Swim School actually offers private lessons and I could totally make a case for doing these. In fact, Liam has been doing so well that he’s almost ready to move up to Glider 2. It could be any week and he’s so excited about it.
With all this progress, we’ve also been able to ditch the swimming headband. It was so helpful to Liam while he needed it, but I’m happy to have one less thing to keep track of. He’s the one who decided he didn’t need it anymore, but I think some encouragement from his instructor helped a lot too.
I can’t wait to share another update with you in a few months. Side note: we’ve opted not to switch to the Lewis Center location for now since we’re still looking for a house. But if you’ve started swim lessons there, I’d love to hear about it! How do you like the new location?
