Do your kids love music? Mine definitely do. Did you know that there are actually a number of great benefits to exposing your kids to music beyond simply enjoying a good tune? One of the ways our family adds music to our day is by listening to Wondery’s Melon’s House Party podcast.
Why is music so important?
Music has been proven to accelerate brain development – especially in speech and reading skills, improve memory, and help social-emotional development. So when we’re listening to music with our kids, we’re helping them build their confidence, develop self-regulation skills, spark creativity, improve social skills and so much more! In our house, music listening is often combined with dancing around in the living room. It’s not only great for physical exercise, but self expression too.
Melon’s House Party
Melon’s House Party is a children’s podcast from Wondery Media. It introduces listeners to Melon, an adorable puppy, who has a house full of friends including her best friend Couch. Melon and Couch go on a musical adventure every episode, which is full of catchy, original music. I’ve even found myself nodding along to the beat along with my kids.
The podcast is geared towards kids ages 5-12, but even my 2-year-old loves listening along because the music is so fun. Each episode includes important lessons to learn, including the importance of friends and family, and encourages problem solving and creative thinking as Melon and Couch learn about the world around them.
Melon’s House Party episodes are all about 30 minutes long. This is the perfect length for listening in the car when our family heads to swim lessons or baseball games. If our drive is shorter, I’ve also found that my kids are more than willing to leave early so we can finish the episode in the parking lot instead of having to wait until later to find out how Melon’s adventure ends. They also ask to listen to episodes at home. It’s a really great alternative to screen time and something we can all listen to as a family. We can also listen while they’re coloring or doing another activity around the house.
Wondery just launched season 2 of Melon’s House Party. This means we’re in for another great season of original music we can’t stop singing and joining in on Melon and Couch’s adventures.
You can listen to Melon’s House Party wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts or on the Wondery app. New episodes go up every Wednesday.
