I recently had the opportunity to try out a new photography tool called lookielookies. As both a professional photographer and
a mama who photographs her kid all the time, I’m always interested to see what’s out there that could help me do one, or both, better. Liam has an adorable side profile and the most kissable cheeks, but truth be told, I never get as many photos of him looking directly at the camera as I would like. Because he’s a toddler. Anything and everything is more interesting than I am, no matter how many silly faces I make or how much I jump around trying to get his attention. The same goes for many of my family sessions too. As much as I love real, authentic lifestyle photography, a photo with everyone looking at the camera is a great gift I like to give my clients. That’s where lookielookies comes in.
So what is it? Lookielookies is a little photo bunny designed to catch the attention of your smallest subjects. The bunny attaches to the back of your phone or camera by a small suction cup. You can then adjust the height and position of your bunny so that it can perch happily on top of your camera. And if that isn’t fun enough for your subject, you can push a little button in the back that causes the light in the bunny’s camera to light up, blink and change colors.
It’s no surprise that lookielookies was created by a mom, with other moms in mind. The lookielookie character comes with a little travel bag so that you can take it with you on your adventures. It also fits on both digital cameras and smartphones, making it easy to use on all your devices. One lookielookie fits on everything so you don’t have to buy multiple versions of the same thing to fit all of your phones and cameras.
The verdict: As a mom, I wish I had known about lookielookies when Liam was younger. The blinking lights are a great sensory attention-grabber for younger babies. For toddlers, I think it just depends on your kid. Mine is pretty independent and wants to hold anything interesting himself. As soon as I put the lookielookie on my camera, Liam is instantly asking if he can “hold the bunny” so he can activate the lights himself. It takes some bribing to get him to let me keep it on the camera. When he does, though, I’ve been able to get some pretty great photos of him looking right into the camera, which is a total win in my book. Liam also adores the companion “stuffy”, a matching stuffed bunny, that came with our lookielookie. He thinks it’s great that we each get a little bunny to play with. Overall, though, I feel like Liam is past the “best” age for the lookielookie. This would have been perfect when he was a baby, before he turned one. Now that he’s older, it’s just harder in general to get him to stay still and give me his full attention every time, even with J making a fool of himself jumping around behind me.
As a photographer, though, this lookielookie is getting a permanent spot in my camera bag. When it comes to families with babies and younger kids, anything new, shiny (or blinky) can be a huge help. I can’t wait to use it on some upcoming baby sessions I have.
There are two lookielookies to choose from: Zookie, the blue bunny like we have, and Jookie, the yellow bunny. You can buy just the photo bunny or the companion bundle with both the photo bunny and the stuffy. Want to pick out your own lookielookie character? You can see them on the website or check out some super happy, smiley kiddos on the lookielookies Instagram page.
