I’m not exactly sure how this happened, but Halloween is quickly becoming a favorite holiday around our house. Liam has been wearing his costume nearly every day and we’ve already indulged in fall festivals all around Columbus. And with Halloween comes a change in our bookshelves to add Halloween-themed books! I love filling Liam’s bookshelves with holiday-specific stories. It helps us get in the mood for different seasons and holidays. Plus, it keeps our book collection fresh so we’re not reading the same stories over and over again. We even have some favorites from previous years that Liam looks forward to. Here’s our current list of favorite Halloween books. I love books that have unique plot lines, leave room for the imagination to enhance the story and/or have amazing artwork, and I feel like each of these meet that in some way.

1. Bonaparte Falls Apart – Bonaparte the skeleton is nervous about starting school because his bones keep falling off. His friends come to his aid to help him figure out a solution to keep him all together. Some of the humor in this book is just a little beyond Liam at the moment (he just turned 5). But as the parent, it made me giggle all the way through.
2. How to Make Friends with a Ghost – Do you know what to do if you come across a ghost? Make him your friend, of course!
3. Vampirina Ballerina – Being a ballerina poses quite the challenge when you’re a vampire. But that won’t stop Vampirina from following her passion.
4. Gilbert the Ghost – Just like people – no two ghosts are exactly the same. We love this story about embracing what makes you unique.
5. No Such Things – There’s no such thing as ghosts. Or is there?
6. The Scariest Book Ever – Usually it’s people who are afraid of ghosts, but in this book, it’s the other way around. This story leaves lots of room for silly discussion and creative narration.
7. Cat’s Night Out – How many cats will dance the night away? Not only will you love the rhythmic language, but you’ll also love the counting opportunity this book offers.
8. The Dark – A great way to conquer your fear of the dark is to make friends with it.
9. Square (Shape Trilogy) – Although this book, along with its trilogy counterparts – Triangle and Circle – aren’t technically Halloween-themed, the artwork makes it the perfect addition to the rest of your Halloween books.
10. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: A BabyLit Colors Primer – This book doesn’t have many words, but you already know the story. Tell it with your own twist, weaving in the colors of Dorothy’s yellow brick road and the Emerald City.
11. Monster Trouble! – What’s the one thing monsters hate most in this world? Kisses!
12. Frankenstein: A BabyLit Anatomy Primer – For your monster-loving toddler, this is the perfect way to teach anatomy.
13. Dracula: A BabyLit Counting Primer – A spooky take on counting.
