Does your family listen to podcasts together? We recently discovered Wondery’s newest children’s podcast The Adventures of Cairo and I’m so excited to tell you all about it!
The Adventures of Cairo is a new children’s podcast from Wondery Media about 7-year-old Cairo Carter. Cairo lives in the big city surrounded by his family and friends. Each episode has Cairo navigating new social situations and getting help from his community. As Cairo learns some important coming-of-age life lessons, it’s been a great opportunity for our family to have conversations around the same topics, including managing money, having courage and giving to others.
Podcasts have been a source of entertainment for myself the last few years, but it never really occurred to me that there were some really great children’s podcasts out there until I was looking for ways to enrich our homeschooling experience last year. We started listening to podcasts together as a family as a way to make drive time a fun and educational experience. Whether it’s a 15-minute drive to swim lessons or a long road trip, podcasts have been great for our family. Here’s why:
Screen-free entertainment
My kids are inundated with screens. At home, at school….pretty much wherever we go. Children’s podcasts are a great way to offer screen-free entertainment. There’s nothing to watch, but if you choose a good podcast, you won’t even miss it. The Adventures of Cairo is produced really well so it keeps the boys interested. The episodes are also fairly short – about 10-15 minutes each, so the kids can stay engaged the whole time.
Family-friendly content
Another thing I really like about children’s podcasts is that they’re geared specifically towards families and children, so I don’t have to worry about language or content. In The Adventures of Cairo, Cairo is seven and the podcast itself is aimed at kids ages 5-9. I love that the topics they’re covering are already ones we’re discussing in our home, or will be soon, so it’s been a great way to talk about some of these social situations my kids are navigating just like Cairo. We listen together as a family so that I’m able to answer questions the boys have after the episode.
Educational fun
My kids learn the best when they don’t even know that something’s educational because they’re enjoying the experience so much. This is another reason why we love children’s podcasts. The boys get to enjoy listening to a really fun and entertaining story, but they don’t realize how much they’re learning from it too. The first episode of The Adventures of Cairo, for example, is all about money. Cairo spends his weekly allowance instead of saving for a field trip, so he has to do extra chores around the house to earn more money. This episode was a great opportunity for us to discuss topics around money that we’ve been having in our house already. Things like when to save and when to spend, and being extra helpful and getting rewarded for our hard work.
Another thing I really appreciate about The Adventures of Cairo that is really unique to this podcast is the diverse creators and cast of the show. We are a multi-racial family and we value diversity in our books and media. Even though children’s podcasts are a form of auditory entertainment, representation still matters.
You can listen to The Adventures of Cairo on the Wondery app or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. New episodes drop every Tuesday.
